At least oregano, you must have surely tasted it more than once, even without being aware of it. You do eat pizza, don't you? Well, the pizza spice seasoning most certainly contains oregano.

A tasty food and especially traditional Greek food recipes can easily become a gourmet food with the addition of the proper herb or spice, whether that may be Greek wild mountain oregano, herbal tea, sage, rosemary, basil, dill, chamomile, parsley, thyme, or any other herb, spice or aromatic plant.

Origin of names

The international names of several spices, herbs and aromatic plants have confirmed ancient Greek origins.
Oregano is a compound from the Greek words "óros" (mountain) and "gános" (joy), i.e. "joy of the mountain", probably due to the fact that the oregano roots prohibit the washing of the mountain slopes by rain.
Thyme originates from the Greek word "thýmon", which means courageous. By the way, one of the greatest compliments of ancient Greeks was to say that "someone smelled like thyme".
Basil comes from the Greek word "basilikós", meaning royal.
Finally, one should not forget the laurel leaves (bay leaves), with which Greeks used to apparel winners as a sign of honor.

History

People used spices and herbs since the old ages, in order to enrich their daily meals. History has recorded even several wars, which started with the intention to conquer areas, where spices and herbs grew. Those were also regarded as "treasures" on account of which the exploration of the unknown world began in the 15th and 16th centuries, leading to the discovery of the New World and America. They have constituted a basic item of commerce, whilst for a rather long period of time they were the exclusive privilege of the rich, who were able to enjoy the most refined flavors.
